Mass Human Extinction Event (MHEE) Post-Incident Report
Log 1 [05-27-2017]: ESA space telescope "Ceres" detects unrecognized energy wave moving at high velocity in the direction of Earth. ESA denied permission to publish findings for security reasons.
Log 2 [05-30-2017]: Analysis of energy wave shows that it is a previously unrecognized rare emission from the pulsar PLSR-00839-2016. Energy discovered to not be radio waves like that of a typical pulsar emission, but actually incredibly high-frequency gamma rays with a wavelength 1/1000th of a Nanometre long. Frequency also confirmed to cause potential shutdown of neural cells, but other cells are left unharmed. Theories suggest that sentient beings affected lose higher brain functions, remaining alive but incapable of cognitive thought. Additionally, the pulse causes serious electronic damage, damaging complex devices such as computers and satellites beyond repair. Simpler electronics such as microwaves and ovens may be repaired with some work.
Log 03 [06-13-2017]: Energy pulse, now codenamed "Solaris" expected to hit Earth by early June in 2018. All data on Solaris seized and a research team composed of members from five (5) G8 nations is assigned to research Solaris. Research team's analysis of Solaris's travel path shows that it has been stopped by various major ice comets. Theory developed and later confirmed that Solaris can be stopped by a thick layer of ice or water. Metal shown to resonate wave, absorbing it and scattering it at a reduced rate.
Log 04 [06-20-2017]: Mass G8 summit meeting held in secret to discuss Solaris. After voting, majority ruled that a project would be undertaken by the Solaris research team to cryogenically freeze one thousand two hundred and fifty (1500) healthy men and and an equal amount of healthy women internationally to repopulate major sectors of Earth. Candidates chosen were required to be able to sexually reproduce and would be required to have professional expertise in one of the following fields: science, medicine, architecture, carpentry, engineering, leadership, etc.
Log 05 [06-02-2018]: All candidates have been chosen for project. 300 people (equally male and female) are to be frozen per control zone (10 in total). Solaris expected to arrive on June 08. Information on Solaris is published internationally.
Log 06 [06-06-2018 onwards]: Collected below and in the rest of the pages are personal diary entries of various survivors living in the Eastern American Seaboard, from before the incident to after.

Okay, basically: every living thing with cognitive functions (so not plants) is in a vegetative state after a pulse of strange radiation sweeps through Earth.
